Act I

Carol is questioned by Jenny Ducane. Where were you on Sunday? 12:00am, I was in bed. 6:00am, I woke up. 6:00-6:15, I slumbered. Jenny feels that she’s avoiding the question. When were you around people? I’m not much for hanging around people. Where’s Lew? Can’t say. Stan tries to make someone notice him. When he opens the paper on the table, Jenny sees that Desiree is dead. He turns the room upside down. As it reassembles by itself, Magda enters. Carol asks what she is doing there. She wants piece of all this. After all that Magda has done? She almost did it, but then she left town. Magda had to regroup and find out what she did wrong. Carol asks if she brought her lover back with her.

Auralee demands to know why Desiree left. He just says that family is important. They agree that they should be one happy family. She tells him that he should give Danvers a raise.

Geneva shows up to visit Desiree. Danvers is cleaning when she knocks at the door. They hate to tell her, but there’s been some family drama. Desiree was sent away by her father. Did she get pregnant? Her father disowned her. They don’t think she’s pregnant, but it’s possible. So much has been against Desiree. Geneva asks Danvers to tell her what happened. In song. She’s more than just a human mop. Her father saw some pictures of her. So he told her that she had better get out of there. Get away from here. You can’t say here anymore. Danvers has waited for someone to acknowledge them. Geneva needs to find out what Hugo knows.

Geneva drives Ned Beaumont. She thinks that he should learn to drive. He does so many dangerous things already. Geneva has so many things on her mind. Ned Beaumont asks what. Desiree has been disowned. Is she pregnant? Geneva says that she needs to find her. She’s her friend, it’s her job. Ned tells her that he’d do anything for her. He knows where she should go for answers. They drive downtown.

They go to the Children of Important Men Club, otherwise known as the Nepo Club. Auralee loves it there. She is very much aware of her privilege. She kind of scares Geneva. Auralee says that she’s the good sister. They share a drink.

Geneva comes clean about her affair with Orestes. They are in secret love. Auralee knew it! You know that everyone could die, right? Like Romeo and Juliet. Everyone ends up dead. Geneva didn’t know. They only studied Act I in school!

Stan shows up at Lew’s office, where Carol is soliloquizing. Stan has torn up a newspaper into a bunch of letters, which he uses to tell Carol that he is there. He wishes he could communicate faster. He sings, and Carol is able to join in, and sings in unison. She confesses that she loved him. Stan is so happy. He breathes on the window and writes in the condensation. They hold hands.

Geneva gets relationship advice from Danvers. They had many relationships, most of them platonic, but are happy to share from their experience. Geneva needs to be honest with her partner. And do absolutely everything for them. Geneva doesn’t know how to do anything. Big Daddy pays people to do everything for her. Danvers asks Geneva to tell them about him. Well, he’s handsome. That’s enough, isn’t it? Danvers agrees it is. This is just like the first act of Romeo and Juliet. Danvers swears that they won’t tell anyone who it is. It’s Orestes. Good catch! You can come tell me anything. We have a symbiotic relationship. Geneva asks if it is too much to tell him she loves him when somebody else is in love with her? Tell him loudly. In public.

Auralee goes to Lew’s office, while Magda putters inside. Auralee rehearses what she’ll say before she enters. Magda can hear her. Auralee assumes that Magda works for Lew. She introduces herself with her full name, Magda Duluth. Oh! You’re his sister! Magda doesn’t know how to make it clearer for Orville. Oh! You bastardized my name. I’ll take it. I get it. You think I’m stupid. Magda doesn’t want Lew, she wants what Lew has. You think I don’t know what is going on here? Do you know how much money is behind all this. Auralee hopes that she enjoys Lew’s office. It’s all that there is. Lock the door on your way out, Magda

Act II

Auralee and Geneva are still at the Nepo Club. They compare fathers. Geneva’s gives her horses and Auralee’s gets her jewelry. Auralee asks where Orestes is, as Ned Beaumont and Danvers wait outside for them. Geneva says that Orestes sometimes just disappears. Auralee reminds her that Geneva and Orestes are from rival families. Auralee tells her that she has been telling too many people about her secret love. Ned Beaumont asks Danvers about Desiree. They agree that Hugo is at fault. Auralee asks if Danvers talked about a symbiotic relationship. She really can’t trust her. Geneva should get out of there. Ned Beaumont needs Danvers to tell him why Desiree has been kicked out. He wants to know about the boid. You know, that fly in the air. Auralee needs to get something just for Geneva and Orestes.

Danvers tells Hugo that he needs to make things good with Desiree. Do you swear on your life? I swear, but maybe not on my life. Danvers think that he doesn’t take things very seriously. He notices that Danvers is pouting. What’s the matter. They don’t think he values them. He says that he’ll get her a broom. Maybe I should be getting you the tools you need for the job. Like next time you do the roofing. Danvers asks Hugo to list everything that they do. He gets emotional when he realizes everything that they have done for the family.

Outside of City Hall are Jenny Ducane and Ned Beaumont. She needs s break, a lead. He asks if she always talk to herself. Sometimes that’s the only way she can hear herself. He keeps his voices in his head, but they speak in different voices. Jenny recognizes him. You’re Grossman’s hired gun. He’s more like Molly maid. The quicker picker upper. Well, he does collect a bounty. She asks him about his past. He came from a poor family before Grossman came along. He made him somebody. Ned Beaumont can help her. Her salary is modest, but she can give him tips. They could have a symbiotic relationship. He tells Jenny to come get him when she needs him.

Magda visits Hugo in his home. She reassures him that even though Lew is not there, his case is still being worked on. He pours her some champagne. Nothing like it in the mid-afternoon. Hugo thinks that she’s looking good, but she hasn’t been there for a while. She got divorced. She wants what Lew has. Running the business would be easier than getting alimony out of Lew. He tells her that she needs to look out for herself. Hugo is quite taken with her. She should take over the business, she’s got a head for business. The more he speaks, the less Magda can contain herself. He massages her shoulders. Touch my ears!  Touch my ears! He wants to take her for dinner where his daughter took him. It’s very romantic.

Carol, Auralee and Magda all wonder where new is, separately. Carol worries, Auralee is taken with him, and Magda worries about the business. They sing Where Are Lew Now.

Stan is alone in Lew’s office. Funny, you don’t think it’ll be that bad when you die. You’ll go to heaven or hell. But you just go back to the same place you started from. You think that when you get your revenge, you get to move on.  But no, you’re just left there. An aimless wondering lost soul. No matter how much you think someone can feel you, they can’t. So now, I have the rest of eternity to figure out why. It felt good to get that off his chest. He hears angelic voices. Is this it? Do I get to leave this place behind? A voice says that people just tell them what they want. They chat, because the voice never gets to. The voice knows that Lew’s not there, so he hired the pigeon chorus. Stan tells them that if Lew ever needs him, just find a pigeon. As he elevates to heaven, Carol sees him. He tells her that he loves her. He loves her too.

Distraught, Carol drinks in Lew’s office. She will always love Stan. She sees the newspaper. Body Found in Central Park. What, again? A stranger comes in. It is Adolphus Frogeyes. His twin brothers came to see Lew, but neither of them has been seen since then. He has a piece of vital information for Lew. Will she pass it on for him? She’s promises on Stan’s grave that she will. A gun appear, and shoots him before he can speak. Repeatedly.
